When our club was formed – and don’t forget that the organization is still a little way short of its second birthday – one of the major reasons behind creating a KHL team was the chance to witness hockey at its best. Of course, the ultimate aim was and is to establish a strong team here in China, to turn Red Star into an outfit capable of challenging for honors. But, along the way, it was understood that the way to introduce hockey to a new audience meant bringing some of the best players in the world to arenas in Shanghai and Beijing, and allowing the Chinese public to witness the skill, commitment and excitement of our sport in person.

Goals change games. It’s one of the oldest truisms in the book, yet once again it proved itself in Friday’s meeting with Lokomotiv. The visitor, which handed only a second ever KHL start to rookie goalie Ilya Konovalov, had the teenager to thank for a brilliant early save to deny Brandon DeFazio. In times of trouble, ‘Go west!’ was often the cry. From the old world to the new, then from the densely populated cities of the east coast to the wide expanses of the west. For Red Star, a run of 14 losses in 16 games certainly represented trouble, and the schedule ordered our longest trip of the season as the team looked to uncover brighter prospects.
