Olympian, All-Star and now a Dragon. Welcome, Vojtech Mozik!

Another day, another new arrival. And, once again, we’re bringing a familiar face back to Moscow Region. True, for Czech defenseman Vojtech Mozik this isn’t quite the same homecoming as Anton Lazarev is enjoying. The 27-year-old previously played in Podolsk rather than Mytishchi. But, after 18 months in Sweden, it’s a welcome return to the KHL.

Why so welcome? Well, first, Mozik enjoyed two highly successful seasons with Vityaz. On the same roster as Alexander Yevseyenkov, another newly-recruited Dragon, the Czech played more than 100 games and earned an All-Star call and a trip to the playoffs. On the international stage, he was also invited to join the Czech team that reached the final stages of the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang and was only denied a medal in the bronze medal game when Wojtek Wolski’s Canada got the win.

Those seasons in the KHL were the most productive of Mozik’s career to date. He compiled 55 (14+41) points in total at a rate of almost exactly one every second game. Hockey in our league clearly brings out the scoring potential. However, there is more to Vojtech’s game than plundering points. His stats show that he is also a master of the other part of the D-man’s game – keeping the opposition away from our net. While his scoring has dropped since his move to Farjestad in 2019, he still delivered solid numbers in Sweden with a +15 rating in his first season and a +7 score up to now in the current campaign. Thus, whether joining the attack or staying at home to thwart opposing forwards, we can expect a positive contribution to the cause.

We’re looking forward to seeing how quickly our new recruit can re-adapt to life in the KHL. Of course, it’s unlikely that he will be thrown into battle immediately when the Dragons take on Barys on Saturday. But hopefully next week he’ll be in place, pulling on his new jersey and representing our team with pride.
