Kunlun Red Star 3 HC Sochi 4

Another defeat, and another hard loss to take. This game highlighted some of the best and worst of Red Star’s play this season … and despite a stirring comeback, it ended in a narrow victory for our visitor.

Take two. Pavel Vorobei – KHL’s Rookie of the Week

30 November 2017

To mark the end of the eleventh week’s play of the tenth season of the Championship (due to the season break for the Eurotour we have included performances in matches played on the 6th and 7th of the month) the Kontinental Hockey League has named the best players of the week in four categories.

The international break brought some changes to Red Star’s roster … but there was no immediate change of luck as the team returned to action on Tuesday. Not for the first time, our guys battled hard and arguably deserved better than a shoot-out defeat; once again, though, the unforgiving stats show another loss.

Kunlun Red Star 0 Dinamo Minsk 2

Sometimes it feels like a team just can’t catch a break. Thursday’s encounter with Dinamo Minsk promised to be a battle between two clubs in similar positions. Both Red Star and our Belarusian visitor are scrapping for a playoff place in their respective conferences, and both had legitimate hopes of taking something from the game. Our recent form was not encouraging on paper – just one win in six coming into this match-up – but individual performances offered more grounds for hope. With some more clinical finishing, with a kinder bounce of the puck, the whole picture might have looked very different.

But, along the way, it was understood that the way to introduce hockey to a new audience meant bringing some of the best players in the world to arenas in Shanghai and Beijing, and allowing the Chinese public to witness the skill, commitment and excitement of our sport in person.

Kunlun Red Star 1 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 4

Goals change games. It’s one of the oldest truisms in the book, yet once again it proved itself in Friday’s meeting with Lokomotiv. The visitor, which handed only a second ever KHL start to rookie goalie Ilya Konovalov, had the teenager to thank for a brilliant early save to deny Brandon DeFazio. Had the youngster failed to reach that one …

In times of trouble, ‘Go west!’ was often the cry. From the old world to the new, then from the densely populated cities of the east coast to the wide expanses of the west. For Red Star, a run of 14 losses in 16 games certainly represented trouble, and the schedule ordered our longest trip of the season as the team looked to uncover brighter prospects.
